These days, the average person likely has more passwords than they can count, often numbering in the dozens or scores. Unfortunately, many people try to keep things simple by using easy-to-remember passwords as their logins, making themselves into an easy target for hackers looking to steal their personal information.

Luckily, there are measures you can take to make your passwords more secure and tougher to crack for would-be thieves. Courtesy of Keystone Technology Management, your go-to e-waste company in New York, take a look at our list of actions you can take to keep your digital information safe and sound.

  1. Create a Long Password

The longer your password is and more letters, numbers, and symbols it has, the more difficult it will be for someone to guess your password. Further, even advanced computer programs that can run through thousands of possible letter and number combinations in a matter of minutes will have a harder time cracking your code as well.

  1. Use a Nonsense Word or Phrase

While long passwords are good, nonsense passwords are even better. Not only will it be nearly impossible for a human to guess your password, but by creating a string of letters and numbers found nowhere else on the internet or published literature, hacking software will be hard put to guess it as well.

  1. Avoid Obvious Personal Information

If you’re thinking of using your birthday or address as your password, think again; such passwords can be easily guessed by anyone who finds out these personal details about you. If you must choose a security question and answer for an online account, select one that is difficult to find.

  1. Don’t Reuse Your Passwords

Using the same password for multiple accounts can put you at great risk. By putting all of your eggs in one basket, a hacker who succeeds in discovering your password will have access to many or possibly even all of your accounts, rather than just one.
